Garden waste collections will resume in Rotherham

Brown bin

Garden Waste collection services in Rotherham will resume on Monday 23 August 2021.

Rotherham Council is asking subscribers to the service to put out their garden waste bin on their next scheduled collection date so that the waste collection team can collect their bins.

Due to a national HGV driver shortage, the service will be operating with minimal staff which means it is possible that some collection rounds may be delayed. The Council will be running extra rounds, including at the weekend, to ensure all brown bins are collected.

The Council is also expecting that the volume of garden waste to be collected will be greater than usual to start with, so lorries will need to go to be emptied more often which may also lead to some delays.

In the event that your collection is delayed, subscribers to the service should do the following:

  • Leave your bin out if it is not collected that day, so it’s ready for our crews to collect.
  • Only report your garden waste collection as missed if it is two or more working days late.
  • Help the crews complete the rounds as fast as possible, for example by ensuring parked cars are not preventing access for the lorries.

In common with many other Councils and businesses, Rotherham Council has been impacted by driver absence and a lack of availability of agency drivers to cover. Over the past few weeks, the Council has been taking measures to increase their pool of in-house drivers to make the service more resilient in the longer term.

Paul Woodcock, Strategic Director of Regeneration and Environment at Rotherham Council, said: “I would like to thank all of our subscribers for their patience and would like to take this opportunity to apologise for the inconvenience caused by the temporary suspension of the garden waste service.

“I ask residents to be aware that only waste that is in your garden waste bin will be collected. If you have excess garden waste, you can take this to your Household Waste Recycle Centre. Further information is available on the Council’s website.

“Our waste teams have been working hard to get this service back up and running in challenging circumstances, so please be kind if you see any of the team out on their rounds.”
