Payments of the Government’s Council Tax rebate have now been made to more than 70,000 band A to D households.
These payments are to households who pay their Council Tax by Direct Debit, using the bank account used to make payment. Please be patient and allow time for these payments to show in your account.
There are 1,200 households, where the banking information we held had not been used for over 18 months to take a direct debit. In those cases we are making further checks before releasing payment, which we anticipate will be credited to accounts next week.
There are approximately a further 2,000 cases in which the name on the direct debit account does not match that on the Council Tax account. The Government criteria for the scheme states that payment can only be made to the person liable for the Council Tax. In these cases a cheque will be provided to the property for the liable Council Tax payer when cheques are issued to non-Direct Debit payers at the end of May.
Unless your query is urgent, please do not contact the Council about these rebate payments and allow time for payment to be made using the system we have established. This will allow our team to focus on processing payments as quickly as possible.
