Sky Ride Local leader Chris Orange (far left) gets ready to take her group on a tour of the Rotherham countryside

Sky Ride Local rides are guided bike rides offering opportunities to anyone who would like to cycle with a group along scenic planned routes.

The rides would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of local cyclists who give up their time to work as Ride Leaders. Offering six themes of ride with levels for all cycling abilities, there is something for everyone within the Sky Ride Local programme.

Chris Orange is a Sky Ride Local Ride Leader, and a Breeze champion leading women’s social group rides. Chris gave us an insight into what it’s like to be a Ride Leader and what makes Rotherham so special for cyclists...

What do you like most about being a Ride Leader?

As a life-long cyclist with a passion for riding my bike and experience in many branches of the sport from racing to cycle camping, nothing pleases me more than sharing my knowledge of the many lovely local routes that we have in the Rotherham area, both on and off road. You really don’t have to go very far!

What’s the best thing about Sky Ride Local?

Sky Ride Local is a great way to have fun and keep fit. It’s friendly and best of all it is completely free.

I've just led my one hundredth ride which sounds like a lot but it’s just felt like going out with new friends for a bike ride on a regular basis. The chatter never stops and we know all the best places to get coffee and cake in the area and beyond!

I especially like it on the family-friendly routes when youngsters pick up the safe riding rules. You can hear them as future leaders shouting ‘Coming through on the right!’

I love cycling but lack the confidence negotiating traffic, how can Sky Ride Local help?

Watching people gain confidence riding in a group is great. Most of the routes are on traffic-free or quiet lanes and us Ride Leaders offer lots of tips and encouragement during the rides.

Is the programme family-friendly?

Yes, very. The easy and steady rides are particularly targeted at families. As a route planner I’m always on the lookout for more family-friendly rides. We have plenty of challenging routes too, which are perfect for the more experienced cyclist - there really is something for everyone!

There are lots of free, guided Sky Ride Local bike rides* in and around Rotherham throughout the summer. To see the full schedule and to register your place visit
