Carers Week highlights the hard work and dedication of Rotherham carers

Last week the national campaign, Carers Week, raised awareness of and celebrated the ongoing dedication of carers across the UK.

This year, the theme of Carers Week was Make Caring Visible, Valued and Supported. In 2021 in the UK, there was an estimated additional 4.5million people who have become an unpaid carer due to the coronavirus pandemic.

As part of Carers Week, Rotherham Council staff met with residents and partners, including Crossroads Care Rotherham, the Rotherham Reablement and Sensory Service, Rotherham Carers Forum, and Barnardo’s Young Carers at an event held in All Saints Square.

Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health, Cllr David Roche, said: “Unpaid carers are often overlooked but they provide so many people with vital healthcare and support that makes a monumental difference to vulnerable people. Carers Week gives us the opportunity to raise awareness not only of all that they do for our communities, but also offers organisations like the Council the chance to reach out to make sure they have access to the advice, resources and support they need.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to personally thank all our unpaid carers for their tireless hard work, immeasurable caring, and dedication.”

Carers Week provides an opportunity to help those Carers who don't think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to access much needed support, and highlights the services and support that is available to Carers from statutory, voluntary, and community organisations and groups in Rotherham.

For further information about the support available for unpaid carers, please contact Rotherham Council on 01709 254809, or contact Crossroads Care Rotherham on 01709 360272 or by emailing info@crossroadsrotherham.co.uk.
