Improving safety in Eastwood

An alleyway on Eldon Road in Eastwood has been closed, following concerns around fly-tipping, crime, and anti-social behaviour.

After reports had been received from residents, the Council’s Housing officer met with the Urban Design Police who recommended the closure.

A formal consultation was then carried out and residents were invited to an on-site event. From the consultation process residents were supportive of the proposals to close the alleyway.

A planning application for closure was then submitted and approved.

In order for the changes to be made, Rotherham East Ward Councillors (Tajamal Khan, Rukhsana Haleem and Wendy Cooksey) allocated funding from their Ward Budget for new fencing and gates.

To further improve safety, enhanced street lighting and CCTV has also been installed in the area.

The Council is considering how the space where the alleyway was will be used in future. This will involve engagement with residents next year.

Councillor Tajamal Khan, Ward Councillor for Rotherham East, said:

The closure of the alleyway is a measure that will help to tackle anti-social behaviour, crime and fly-tipping in Eastwood.

“Before any changes were made, we engaged with residents who were supportive of the closure. Further engagement with residents will be carried out and this will help to ensure we make the best use of the space going forward.

“I would like to thank the Neighbourhoods Team, Housing Officer and Housing Asset Team for their work on this project.”
