Students from schools and colleges across Rotherham have performed extremely well in A-Level results published today, according to early analysis.
Almost 3,900 young people across seven sixth forms and colleges in the borough have received their A Level (or equivalent) results today. The indicative results for Rotherham do not include the six A Level students based at Swinton Academy, due to a delay in receiving the results from the exam board.
Whilst all results are still subject to appeal, 97.7% of students in Rotherham achieved the pass grades of A* to E (or equivalent) – which is in line with the pre-pandemic national average in 2019. Wath students had a pass rate of 99.8%, closely followed Brinsworth (99.7%), Dinnington (99.5%), Maltby (99%), Aston (98.9%) and Wickersley (98.7%).
Early analysis also suggests that the percentage of students achieving A and A* grades (or equivalent) from a number of local sixth forms is higher than the national average. Wath (44.2%) Maltby (41.5%), Wickersley (37.4%), Brinsworth (37.3%) and Dinnington (36.8%) all had more A and A* students than the 36.4% national average (36.4%) being reported by the BBC today.
The number of students in Rotherham achieving A* to C grades (or equivalent) was 80.6%, which is higher than the 71.2% in 2019 - the last time exams were taken.
Councillor Victoria Cusworth, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People at Rotherham Council, said: “The early indications are that A Level results in Rotherham are very positive and it is great to see so many young people with a lot to celebrate.
“With the pandemic, it has been an extraordinary couple of years for young people and Covid has undoubtedly been a hugely disrupting factor to education. No matter what their individual results, every young person, teacher, parent and school community should feel extremely proud of what they have achieved in the face of adversity. I couldn’t be prouder of all of you.
“I wish all pupils well in the next stage in their lives and careers, whether this is to go into the world of work or onto higher education.”
Amongst the students celebrating today is Charlotte Travis of Thomas Rotherham College (pictured). Charlotte has secured 4 A* grades and is now headed to the University of Manchester to study Medicine.
