Smokers are encouraged to kick the habit this Stoptober

Smokers across Rotherham are being encouraged to take up a new challenge to quit for 28 days and save money as this year’s Stoptober campaign launches.

From Saturday 1 October, thousands of smokers nationwide will be taking part in Stoptober – an annual NHS campaign which encourages people to quit cigarettes for good and feel the benefits.

A range of support is available for those taking part, including the NHS Quit Smoking App and local services such as Get Healthy Rotherham which offers a range of services to help you find the right resources to suit you. There is also advice and guidance on the Rotherham Hospital website.

While many people try to quit with willpower alone, there are stop-smoking aids to help you to quit, including nicotine patches and chewing gum which are available at local pharmacies and supermarkets.

Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Public Health, Cllr David Roche, said: “Every year thousands of people across the country successfully quit smoking for good because of Stoptober, so if you are wanting to quit, for whatever reason be it to improve your health or to cut down on your outgoing expenses, getting involved in Stoptober is a great way to start your journey. It is important to remember that you’re not on your own.

“There is advice, guidance and support available through the use of apps and our Get Healthy Rotherham service so please do not struggle alone. Find a way that works best for you and kick the habit for good.”

The Get Healthy Rotherham service is a specialist service for adults which can provide a range of support via telephone, face-to-face sessions and an online quit programme. It is a free service and anyone can access support.
