Have your say on additions to the borough’s Local Plan

Rotherham Council is consulting on additional guidance for its borough-wide plan which provides details of where new housing and employment sites are located and can be built across Rotherham.

The Local Plan was adopted in 2018 to provides for future development needs for the borough. The Council has now prepared five new documents which provide additional detail to support local policies. It is these documents that the Council is seeking comments on.

There new Supplementary Planning Documents include:

Developer Contributions – this sets out the process through which the Council will seek contributions from developers in mitigating the impacts of development on areas such as education and culture provision and transport infrastructure.  

Biodiversity Net Gain – this sets out the Council’s approach to seeking Biodiversity Net Gain and reflects current objectives to manage the borough’s biodiversity and support the Climate Change Action Plan.

Retention and replacement of trees – this sets out guidance on the protection of existing trees and provision of replacement and new trees following development, with a view to protecting, enhancing and increasing tree cover within Rotherham.

Handling of soils on development sites – this sets out detailed guidance and best practice on the required assessments of soils to be undertaken on-site.

Development in the Green Belt – this sets out amendments to be adopted in the Local Plan in relation to development in the Green Belt.

Cabinet Member for Jobs and the Local Economy, Cllr Denise Lelliott, said: “These Supplementary Planning Documents have the interest of local residents at the heart, by looking to protect our environment as well as producing better outcomes for communities. I urge anyone with an interest to have their say.”

Members of the pubic and interested parties have until 5pm on 17 October 2022 to comment on these Supplementary Planning Documents.

Following review of the comments the final documents will be published in early 2023.
