Over one thousand children across Rotherham were invited to celebrate completing the Summer Reading Challenge at an event at Magna Science Adventure Centre on Sunday 2 October 2022.
The event included a special theatre performance from the Ministry of Science - Live! where the audiences dives deep into the world of science and takes a look at how science shapes the modern world we live in.
Rotherham Mayor, Cllr Tajamal Khan, and Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Social Inclusion, Cllr David Sheppard, then presented 15 lucky winners with a free annual pass for Magna so that they can continue exploring the world of science.
Cllr David Sheppard said: “The Summer Reading Challenge has been a huge success in Rotherham with many children of all ages being inspired to read more and learning about science, engineering and inventions that changed the world. I’d like to congratulate each and every child who got involved and took up the challenge.”
Throughout the summer, Rotherham libraries hosted events across the borough for children aged 4-11 to meet six fictional characters – called the Gadgeteers – and to get involved in a science and innovation themed activities.
Through taking part in the national challenge, with free materials from local libraries and online via the Challenge website, children were able to access a range of books and resources to keep them reading throughout the summer.
So far, over 1.8million books have been read by children across the UK thanks to the Summer Reading Challenge.
