Rotherham will mark Holocaust Memorial Day later this month

Holocaust Memorial Day 2023

Rotherham Council is inviting residents to join a Holocaust Memorial Day event on Friday 27 January 2023.

The event will take place from 11.30am to 12 noon at All Saints’ Square, in remembrance of the millions of people murdered during the Holocaust and in other genocides.

There will be a range of speakers and performances on the day.

‘Ordinary People’ is the theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2023. This theme will highlight the ordinary people who let genocide happen (as bystanders), the ordinary people who were active perpetrators in genocide, and the ordinary people who were persecuted.

Through the theme, we are also prompted to consider how we can all make decisions to challenge prejudice, stand up to hatred, speak out against identity-based persecution, or even to just shop responsibly.

This will be the 8th annual public Holocaust Memorial Day event held by Rotherham Council and will be hosted by the Mayor of Rotherham.

The Holocaust Memorial Day event supports the Council and Rotherham Together Partnership strategy for ‘Building Stronger Communities’.

Leader of Rotherham Council, Councillor Chris Read, said:

I would like to encourage residents to come and mark Holocaust Memorial Day in Rotherham later this month.

"This is an opportunity to reflect on the lives lost or suffered through the Holocaust and the genocides that followed. It is important that current and future generations can learn from the mistakes of the past to help create a safer and better future."
