What's on this May

It’s May and there are lots of fun events taking place across Rotherham.

This month, Rotherham Town Centre will be hosting The King's Coronation Celebration, Saturday 6 May, 11am to 3pm. Experience lots of fun and entertainment in and around All Saints’ Square and the Minster Gardens. Join Folk Dance Remixed who’ll be getting everyone up on their feet dancing to their funked-up folky Ceilidh Jam (pictured right) which includes live music. And look out for Kitsch and Sync Collective’s Little Miss Majorettes who have been in training ready for their celebratory debut! 

Feel regal as you walk down the red carpet leading to two thrones for an ideal photo opportunity. Also, activities in the Minster Gardens will include a giant inflatable helter skelter, right royal workshops next to All Saints’ Square and more!

Rotherham Minster will be open from 10am showing the King’s Coronation on a big screen, and there’ll be craft activities and refreshments too. For event updates, follow Rotherham Council Events on Facebook.

Rotherham Markets will be holding The King's Coronation Celebration Markets street party in the Outdoor Covered Market on Saturday 6 May, 10am to 3pm, come along and join in the fun!

Rotherham Council has awarded The King's Coronation Grants to community groups and organisations in Rotherham, read more details below.

There are various exciting activities happening in Rotherham Libraries which includes lots of themed King's Coronation crafts and activities, Elmer Day crafts, May is National Share a Story Month activities and join in May Half Term crafts for children.

The Rotherham 10k returns to the borough again on Sunday 14 May. The 2023 event will again have a 10am start time, with the Fun Run/Schools "Run a Mile event" starting at Midday. Find out more details here.

Rotherham Civic Theatre welcomes the drama Jesus, Jane, Mother and Me Thursday 4 May, 7:30pm. Meet Daniel Valentine. He’s a strange boy. It’s Mother’s Day and he has returned to his family home to celebrate. He’s here to tell you his story. But do all stories have a happy ending? Jesus, Jane, Mother and Me is a twisted coming-of-age story blending pitch black humour and heartache by award-winning playwright Philip Stokes (Heroin(e) for Breakfast).

From end of May 2023 to May 2024, Rother Valley Country Park will host a Celebration of the 40th Anniversary of Rother Valley Country Park Opening to the public with an Exhibition in the Mill Building and a short film.

Also, Keppel's Column Tours tickets for May are sold out, but don’t panic if you missed out this time, more dates are being launched throughout the year. Keep an eye on social media for the latest details on the Clifton Park Museum Facebook page.

Events include:

  • Open until Sunday 18 June 2023, the 'Dishes of Rotherham' Exhibition. In this exhibition, artist Simon Grennan creatively brings together food made by ten local cooks from contemporary Rotherham and Rockingham tableware from Clifton Park Museum’s collection. The cooks come from different cooking traditions, including Pakistani, Sudanese, Guinean, Ukrainian, Czech, Yemeni, Chinese and British. Each cook chose a piece of Rockingham tableware from the collection and then cooked, styles and served their dishes on the Rockingham. This fusion of contemporary and traditional comes together in an explosion of spectacle in this unique portrayal of Rotherham past and present, Clifton Park Museum

  • Monday 1 May, 5am to 7am, Dawn Chorus, Herringthorpe Valley Park 
  • Wednesday 3 May, 10am to 11am and 11:30am to 12:30pm, Nelson's Cub Club 'Again'. In our 'Again' session we explore making lots of different patterns. Use the toys to make repeating patterns or thread beads. Try making pattern pictures and enjoy a story. £3.50 per child, adults free, Clifton Park Museum

  • Saturday 6, 13, 20 and 27 May, 9am, Rother Valley parkrun at Rother Valley Country Park - a 5K Run for beginners to experienced runners, all welcome. The 5K distance is great for those starting on the couch to 5K to meet new people and volunteer. Please arrive between 8:15am and 8:45am so you don’t miss the start.
  • 13 May, it's time to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Parkrun at Rother Valley Country Park

The ParkRun community celebrate 10 Years of running at Rother Valley Country Park
Join the volunteers at the end of the run to share the celebration cake made by Elle in the Park café for the joint celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the Park and the 10th Anniversary of Rother Valley ParkRun.

Please register onlone with Parkrun before you first come along to take part, don't forget to bring a scannable copy of your barcode.

King's Coronation Grants awarded to community groups and organisations

Rotherham Council has awarded grants totalling £11,500 to community groups and organisations ahead of the King’s Coronation next month.

In total, 23 groups have been given grants of £500 to support events that will mark the King’s Coronation.

*Rotherham Cultural Partnership, Flux Rotherham and Children’s Capital of Culture

Rotherham’s Cultural Partnership has a Cultural Strategy and 10-year vision for arts and culture. As part of this, a new programme, Flux Rotherham, will deliver lasting impact on Rotherham communities' participation in arts and culture. Flux Rotherham is led by Voluntary Action Rotherham as part of a consortium with Grimm & Co, Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust, Rotherham Open Arts Renaissance and Rotherham Council.

Flux Rotherham will also help to prepare and position Rotherham to deliver the unique Children's Capital of Culture in 2025.

In 2025 Rotherham will become the world’s first Children’s Capital of Culture, designed and delivered by children and young people from across the borough. And the journey to 2025 has already begun!
