Students at the Rowan Centre have taken to the polls to vote for their Student Ambassadors.

The school in Rawmarsh, which teaches young people with social, emotional and mental health needs, recently held a vote to elect pupils to represent each year group.

Cllr Gordon Watson, Rotherham Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, attended the event. He said: “This was an important step for many of the students involved. Standing in front of your peers and outlining your plans for the future of the school can be daunting.

“I was impressed to see the ambitions of the youngsters involved and credit must be given to the hard work of staff who have been working with pupils on their social, emotional and mental health on a daily basis. It’s clear to see that there is a fantastic, dedicated team here who care passionately about the young people they teach.”

A school ambassador at the Rowan Centre is voted for by their classmates as the representative for their year group. They are the person who listens to all the ideas, worries and opinions of the students and brings them to meetings to be shared with teachers and staff.

The school was rated as “good” in all areas, with an “outstanding” accolade rating for pupil behaviour at its last Ofsted inspection in 2018
