Could you be a Councillor?

Be a Councillor

Rotherham Council is encouraging residents to consider standing to become a Councillor.

We need people from all backgrounds and experiences to stand for election.

Elected Councillors represent the 25 wards that make up Rotherham. Full elections are held in all wards every four years. The next set of full elections will take place in May 2024.

Once elected Councillors act as community leaders in their wards and neighbourhoods.

Being a Councillor is something that requires dedication and commitment but the role can be done flexibly around employment, studying, caring, and other voluntary commitments.

Online and in-person information events will be taking place later this month.

  • 28 June at Rotherham Town Hall
  • 29 June online event

All of the events will start at 6pm and finish at 7.30pm.

The events are open to members of the public and will provide the opportunity to:

  • Find out more about the process of standing for election
  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of a Councillor
  • Learn about the support that is available to elected members

Further information on becoming a councillor is included on the Local Government Association website.

Sharon Kemp, Chief Executive at Rotherham Council, said: “If you are passionate about your local community, consider standing to become a Councillor to make a difference.

“It is important that we have candidates and Councillors from different backgrounds with a broad range of skills and life experiences.

“I would like to encourage anyone who is considering becoming a Councillor to come along to the information sessions. It’s a chance to find out more about this important role, as well as the support that is available.”

If you are interested in finding out more about this important role and attending an information event, you can register your interest by emailing electoral.services@rotherham.gov.uk.
