Rotherham Council is marking national Carers Week 2016 by supporting a series of events to celebrate carers in Rotherham.

This year’s Carers Week runs from 6th to 12th June 2016 with a focus on “building carer-friendly communities” and involves Rotherham Carers Forum and partners giving carers the opportunity to feel supported to look after their family or friends.

Carers UK defines a carer as someone who provides unpaid care and support to a family member or friend who has a disability, illness, mental health problem or who needs extra help as they grow older.

Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health, Cllr David Roche, said: “As a Council we are committed to listening to carers in our community as well as supporting Carers Week this year to raise awareness of our valued unsalaried informal carers in the borough, many of whom put their own health at risk by caring for their loved ones.

“We would encourage anyone who is a carer or anyone who would like to find out more to attend one of the many events held this week.”

The events start at New York Stadium on Monday 6th June where Speak Up, on behalf of Rotherham Council, is hosting an information event about the Direct Payments/Care Act 2014 and what to expect from a reassessment.

The Speak Up event will include workshops and information for carers from 10.30am until 2.15pm, with lunch provided. For information and tickets, please contact Speak Up on 01709 720462 or e-mail

Other organisations holding events across the borough during the week include Crossroads Carers Resilience and Volunteer Befriending, Carers 4 Carers, Barnardo’s Young Carers 150th anniversary event (invitation only event).

The finale of the week will be based on the Rio de Janeiro location for the Olympic and Paralympic games with Rotherham Carers Forum hosting its own ‘Carnival for Carers’ along the walkway outside the RAIN Building, S65 1EQ on Friday 10th June from 11am until 2pm.

Carnival Organiser, Interim Secretary of Rotherham Carers' Forum Jayne Price said: "The event is intended to be informal and uplifting. On the day we are using a vibrant Rio Carnival theme due to the Olympic and Paralympic games being held in Rio de Janeiro this year. It will consist of 'market place' style tables, each being allocated to partners who will be happy to chat and engage with carers."

The 'Carnival for Carer's' event will be attended by the Mayor of Rotherham, Cllr Lyndsay Pitchley and the Rt. Hon. Sarah Champion MP. For further updates follow Rotherham Carers Forum Facebook page.
