Decisions agreed by Rotherham Council's Cabinet today

School places, fly-tipping and the market and library development were discussed and agreed when Rotherham Council’s Cabinet held its latest meeting today, Monday 18 December.

Cabinet members agreed to:

1.Increase fixed penalty fines issued to fly-tippers in Rotherham.

People who fly-tip in Rotherham currently face a maximum fine of £400, but this is set to rise to £1,000 from 1 April 2024. Fines for littering offences are set to rise from £150 to a maximum of £500.

2,Sign-off proposals for the market and library complex proposals.

The plans will bring together the library, markets, food hall, gallery and event spaces onto one site, off Drummond Street.

3. Increase the number of school places at Waverley Junior Academy, creating an additional 210 places and 7 classrooms to help meet demand on school places.

These plans remain subject to planning permission and Department for Education approval before they can progress. It is anticipated that the new classrooms will be ready for handover to the trust by August 2025.

4. Use of the remainder of the Covid Recovery Fund to provide support for households with the rising cost of energy bills.

The Energy Crisis Support Scheme will be made available between January and March 2024 and continue to provide grants of £250 for eligible households.

These were the main headlines. Other reports discussed at the Cabinet meeting today included, among others:

  • Adult Social Care Mental Health review
  • Consultation on Home to School Transport Policy
  • Aids and Adaptations Policy
