Treeton civil parish lies 4 miles south of Rotherham town centre in Rother Valley bounded by the river, Hail Mary & Falconer ancient woodlands, farmland and Treeton Dyke. The locality offers great walks, wildlife habitat, fishing & a boat club alongside football, cricket & bowls teams plus as an ex mining village a thriving Miners Welfare.
It’s origins are recorded in the Domesday Book of 1875 when it was called Tretone and the village is proud of St Helen’s it’s 12th century grade 1 listed church alongside numerous other 18th century grade 2 listed ex farm buildings around the village.
1875 saw the arrival of a coal mine and by the turn of the century Treeton boasted a population of around 400 mainly farmers, miners and their families, this swelled to 1,800 as the colliery flourished, with its closure in 1990 and a decade or so later the building of new homes on the site of the old pit now numbers around 3,500.
