Your responsibilities for household waste

You are responsible for making sure that your household waste is disposed of correctly. This includes if someone else gets rid of your waste for you.

If you've hired contractors (for example, builders, gardeners, house clearers or scrap merchants) who are removing waste items from your property, they will normally need to be registered as a waste carrier.

Ask your contractor if they are a registered carrier and confirm their waste carrier number. Their registration can be checked with the Environment Agency.

If your contractor is not registered, you should refuse their services. You can be prosecuted if a contractor does not properly dispose of your waste (for example, if it is fly-tipped).
