Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) Improvement

Our Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) Improvement Officer provides a free service to schools and colleges to support greater inclusion in mainstream settings.

We want children and young people with SEND in Rotherham to achieve the very best outcomes. We'll achieve this through a whole school/college approach to drive change and improve provision for learners with SEND.

Role of the SEND Improvement Officer

The officer works with others to build capacity and to bring about positive change for children and young people with SEND. This ensures that the right support is given in the right place and at the right time for all children and young people. Support is provided to whole school/college systems to identify and meet needs of learners with SEND at the earliest opportunity.

Practice is underpinned by Rotherham SEND Strategy’s vision and values.

Our offer

The SEND Improvement Officer works in and outside of term time.

  • Undertaking whole school/setting SEND Reviews with leaders/SENCOs to identify strengths and areas for development.
  • Embedding the graduated approach across the borough through Good Practice events and sharing of resources and practice.
  • A centralised training offer, including a range of free training packages developed and delivered by RMBC and our partners.
  • Using local and national initiatives to improve practice and provision.
  • Providing advice and support on SEND including termly updates on national and local issues.
  • Termly SENCO network meetings.
  • Completing SEND learning walks and work scrutinies to monitor consistency and quality of provision.
  • Moderation and audits of SEN registers and SEN Support Plans.
