How to recognise abuse

Spotting the signs of abuse is not always easy. The person being abused may be too scared to speak up, especially if they know the person who is abusing them. They may try to hide the abuse.

Below are some signs that someone is being abused to watch out for:

  • Bruising or other unexplained injuries
  • Looking more untidy, dirty, or thinner than usual
  • Change of mood or being withdrawn
  • Declining health for no obvious reason
  • Not wanting to be left on their own with certain people
  • A carer restricting access to the person
