The Rotherham Youth Justice Service, through the governance and direction set by the Rotherham Youth Justice Partnership Board, has a relentless focus on preventing children and young people entering the youth justice system, and when they do, we work to ‘child first’ principles to ensure the best possible outcomes for children, young people and victims of crime.

To work together to prevent young people entering the youth justice system and to empower and support children/young people to achieve their aspirations
To achieve our vision, we work with our partners to
- ensure our children and young people are supported and treated fairly
- help and support children and young people and their families to recognise and build on their strengths and capabilities to fulfil their potential
- encourage children and young people to repair the harm to victims and restore relationships within their communities to increase public confidence and safety
- enable children and young people to be listened to and their wishes and feelings to be heard and acted upon

What is the Rotherham Youth Justice Service?
As part of Rotherham’s Family Help Service, the Youth Justice Service operates within a statutory partnership of multiple agencies, including:
- Rotherham Council’s Children,Young People and Families Services
- South Yorkshire Police
- South Yorkshire Probation Trust
- NHS Rotherham
- Youth Justice Partnership Board
- REMEDI
We are responsible for:
- Providing an appropriate adult for unaccompanied children & young people in police custody
- Bail supervision for Children & young people going through Court
- The operation of both Out of Court Resolutions & Post Court sentences
- The oversight and support for children & young people in custody
- Supporting children & young people with their intervention which could lead to enforcement.
- Providing support to parents
- Finding out the views of victims and encouraging their involvement
What we do
The primary aim is to prevent offending and re-offending by children and young people aged 10 and 17 years as well as supporting those children who are involved in the Criminal Justice system. We operate a triage and assessment system to help identify suitable programmes to address the needs of each individual children & young person with the intention of prevention any further offending.

How we involve children and young people
All young people’s voices are important to us, and all young people are restoratively encouraged to get involved in their assessments, plans and share their views and are empowered throughout the process of meetings, court appearances and panels meetings.
