Dog ownership and control

Report a stray dog

Dogs which are not in the control of their owners can cause a range of problems. For example, car accidents, dog fights and attacks on people. Stray dogs not only cause a nuisance but also lead to unwanted litters of puppies.

To help keep stray dog numbers down, the council has a duty to seize stray dogs.

If the Council seizes a dog the owner will have to pay to recover the dog. The fees from 1 April 2023 are:

  • £67.00  Retrieval of Stray Dogs Fees and Kennels Charge
  • £14.00 per night kennelling fee for subsequent nights

Any person who finds a stray dog and wishes to keep it must do so for not less than 31 days according to law.
