Street Naming

Street renaming and renumbering

On very rare occasions it becomes necessary to rename or renumber a street. This is only done as a last resort when there is confusion over a street name, a group of residents are unhappy with their street name or new properties are built on an existing street making renumbering necessary.

As changing a street name is a time consuming process, this will only be done when there is no alternative. Residents will be contacted and their views taken into account.

Having identified a street naming issue we will contact your local ward councillor and parish council to obtain their views and local knowledge. We will then consult the Royal Mail.

Local residents will be balloted on the issue. At least a two thirds majority is required to make the change.

If your street is renamed, you will need to notify your energy and water providers as well as your bank and Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), if necessary.
