Death certificate copies
To issue a short or full copy death certificate, we will need the deceased's:
- full name (Including all middle names)
- date of death
- age at death or date of birth
- place of death (for example, name of nursing home or hospital)
- home address, if different from place of death
- occupation
The cost for each non-urgent certificate is £12.50. The national target for issuing non-urgent certificates is 15 working days from the date of request.
If you require an urgent certificate the cost is £38.50 per certificate. These are prepared within 24 hours (excluding weekends and bank holidays) and can be collected in person or posted out to you. If you indicate you would prefer to collect the certificate in person, the Registrar will call you when the certificate is ready and arrange a time for you to collect.
A short certificate does not contain sensitive information regarding the deceased’s gender or cause of death. The registration service cannot guarantee whether an organisation would accept a short certificate for dealing with the deceased’s estate, rather than a full certificate.
The Registration Service recommends that applicants opt for Royal Mail’s ‘Signed For’ postage at a cost of £3.35 per order, this is subject to change in line with Royal Mail fees. Where customers opt for standard postage there is no additional charge.
If you have not received your certificate, please only contact the service if you have not received your certificates 20 working days after placing your order.
