Marrying in a Church or other Religious Building

Other Religious Marriages

All other religious buildings certified for marriage which are not governed by the Church of England

If you wish to marry within a non-conformist Religious Building, you will each be required to make an appointment to give your notice of marriage at the Register Office in the district in which you live. You will be required to bring documentation to verify your identity, nationality, marital status and home address. The statutory fee to give a notice of marriage is £35 per person and is payable upon booking the appointment.

Details from your notice of marriage will be displayed electronically at the Register Office for a statutory period of 28 clear days. If no legal impediments which would prevent you legally marrying are identified the Superintendent Registrar will issue the Marriage Schedule. The Minister registering your marriage at the Religious Building will need the Marriage Schedule in order for your marriage to take place.

It may be possible for the Marriage Schedule to be emailed directly to the Minister, if not, you will be asked to collect it from the Register Office and hand it to the Minister before the date of your marriage.

In some circumstances the Registrar General for England and Wales may extend a statutory waiting period for up to 70 days, this is where additional checks are required to be made.

In extenuating circumstances an application can be made to the Registrar General for England and Wales to waiver the statutory 28 day waiting period. There is a statutory fee payable to the Registrar General of £60 per person, per couple for consideration of granting the waiver. There is no guarantee this would be granted and the fee is non-refundable regardless of the decision made.

To make an enquiry or to book a notice of marriage appointment please complete the online form below, a member of the Registration Team will make contact with you to arrange a suitable time and date to give notice of marriage.

Returning the Marriage Schedule

The Minister of religion will check the information through with you at the time of the marriage. You and your partner will be asked to check and sign the Marriage Schedule on the day of the marriage, after the legal words have been spoken.  Your witnesses and the Minister will also sign the schedule.

It is a legal requirement that the signed Marriage Schedule is returned to Rotherham Register Office within 21 days of the marriage. For security reasons the Marriage Schedule should be delivered by hand, the Minister of Religion who officiated at your ceremony will discuss this with you. It will not be possible for you to receive a marriage certificate until the Marriage Schedule has been received at the Register Office and recorded in the electronic marriage register.

Marriage Schedules are to be returned to the Register Office Monday to Friday 9.30am-12.30pm and 2.00pm till 4.30pm. The service is not open on weekends or bank holidays.

The address for returning marriage schedules is;

Register Office
Riverside House
Main Street
Rotherham
S60 1AE

On street parking is available on Main Street with a further car parking available at the Statutes car park, located behind Rotherham Police Station on Main Street.

After the details of the Marriage Schedule have been recorded in the electronic marriage register, you may order a marriage certificate online. There is a statutory cost of £11.00 per certificate

Any certificates ordered will be ready to collect or posted out on the 8th day after the Marriage Schedule is received by the Register Office.   If you wish for the marriage certificates to be posted the Registration Service recommends use of the Royal Mail ‘Signed For’ postage which carries an additional charge of £2.00.
