Coronavirus Contact Tracing in Rotherham
National NHS test and trace
To support national contract tracing efforts, we are asking all residents to download and use the NHS COVID-19 app, and for businesses and venues to create and display QR posters to allow visitors to log in.

In the event of a Rotherham resident testing positive for coronavirus (COVID-19), the national NHS test and trace team will contact you to give advice and obtain details of anyone you’ve been in contact with.
There has been considerable recent media coverage relating to law enforcement accessing Test and Trace data. To allay concerns and answer any questions you may have in terms of data and privacy the position is that:
- app users are anonymous, and the app cannot force them to self-isolate or identify them if they are not self-isolating
- the app cannot be used to track your location, for law enforcement, or to monitor self-isolation and social distancing.
However, we hope that users will follow app advice to self-isolate to protect their loved ones and stop the spread of the virus.
Local test and trace - enhanced service
If the NHS test and trace team have been unable to contact you within 24 hours, your case will be passed to local test and trace team at Rotherham Council who will contact you. You'll be asked where you've been recently and who you've been in close contact with. This will help the NHS contact anyone who may have caught the virus from you and ensure the NHS app can work properly.
How we will contact you
- You'll be contacted by text or by phone:
- Text messages will come from Rotherham Council
- Calls will come from 01709 807319
- Please do not contact us regarding test and trace unless you have been contacted by the local Rotherham Council track and trace team regarding your coronavirus (COVID-19 test).
- Children under 18 will be contacted by phone wherever possible and asked for their parent, carer or other family member over the age of 18 to continue the call
- If we fail to make contact with you, a volunteer from the test and trace team or another member of our partner services may be sent to your residence in person to contact you.
What will you be asked?
- Your name, date of birth and postcode
- If you live with other people
- Any places you've been recently, such as a workplace or school
- Names and contact details of any people you were in close contact with in the 48 hours before your symptoms started (if you know these details).
Our test and trace service will not ask:
- for bank details or payments
- for details of any other accounts, such as social media
- you to set up a password or PIN number over the phone
- you to call a premium rate number, such as those starting 09 or 087.

How your information will be used
The information you provide to Rotherham Council Test and Trace service will be handled securely in accordance with data protection law. We may share your information with NHS Test and Trace, other local authorities, and other organisations where necessary to prevent danger to the health of the public as a result of the spread of infection or contamination with coronavirus or coronavirus disease. We will not share or use your information for other purposes unless we have a legal obligation to do so.
Anyone you've been in close contact with during your infectious period will be told to stay at home (self-isolate) for 14 days by the NHS. This is because it can take up to 14 days for coronavirus symptoms to appear.
If we need to contact anyone else because they are one of your close contacts in the infectious period, we will not identify you to them or share your information with them.
