What Are Apprenticeships?
- Apprenticeships give you the opportunity to learn on the job and get paid an apprenticeship allowance
- They normally last between 1 to 3 years and you must work at least 30 hours per week
- You can get an apprenticeship in most work areas, however you may have to find your own employer
- At the end of the apprenticeship you will have a recognised qualification in the area of work where you were employed, as well as Functional Skills qualifications
- Apprenticeships are offered at Level 2, Level 3 and occasional Level 4. They require a good standard of Maths and English. Your Youth Support Worker can advise on the grades required in different work areas and which level would be best for you
What Can I Do After an Apprenticeship?
There are three main options after your apprenticeship:
Advanced/Higher Apprenticeships – you could advance onto the nexlevel of apprenticeship (Level 3 or 4)
Education – if you have achieved qualifications at Level 3 (Advanced Level) you may be able to move on to a higher education course, for example a foundation degree or an honours degree. Some employers may continue to fund your studies right up to this level.
Jobs – The majority of apprentices continue working for the company they trained with. They may be able to work towards promotion within the company to a higher level. You can also use the qualification you have gained, to apply for other jobs.
