Tips for creating a reading space

Creating a space where you can read can really help you stay focused. It doesn’t need to be a dedicated reading space, just somewhere you feel comfortable.

A reading space can really help you get into the ‘reading zone’ and help you concentrate on your reading.

Here are a few things to consider if you want to create a reading space.

  • Find somewhere quiet, like a bedroom, where you are less likely to be disturbed
  • Make sure you have somewhere comfy to sit while you read – or you may decide to lay in bed
  • Having low level music on in the background can help if you don’t want to read in silence
  • Get a blanket or something warm on to make you feel relaxed
  • If you’re reading in the living room, turn the TV off if you can. If you can’t, sit so you’re not in direct sight of the TV so you don’t get distracted
  • Put your phone or tablet device somewhere where you won’t be tempted to use it
  • Get a drink before you sit down to read so you don’t need to get up again – it’s also a good idea to go to the loo before you sit down to read!
  • And don’t forget your bookmark just in case so you don’t lose your place

You can also make reading a bit more fun for younger readers by building a den for them to read in. Dens are easy to build anywhere in your home or garden. All you need are a few chairs, some pegs and a blanket or bedsheet and you can create a comfy, fun space for you or your child. Add some pillows and some fairy lights and you’ve created a magical reading nook!
