Residents encouraged to have their say on the future of housing

New flats in Rotherham
Rotherham Council is launching a major new survey into the future of housing in the borough.

Rotherham Council has launched a survey to help shape the future of the borough’s housing strategy and is calling on residents to get involved and have their say.

The new Housing Strategy Consultation aims to identify the key priorities for the Council over the next three years and focusses on a range of issues including the borough’s climate goals and ambitious plans to increase the number of affordable homes.

The Council has been delivering against the commitments in its Housing Strategy for 2019-22, with key achievements over the past three years including building more council homes and introducing council shared ownership to help more people get onto the property ladder.

This new consultation will refresh the Housing Strategy and set out the key priorities for 2022-25.

The survey aims to discuss a number of key housing issues, including:

  • High quality energy efficient housing
  • Affordable housing to meet local needs
  • Bringing empty homes back into use
  • Investing in existing homes
  • Supporting people to live independently
  • More homes in Rotherham town centre
  • Making sure Rotherham’s communities benefit from housing development

The survey will only take a few minutes to complete, responses are anonymous and residents have until 21st January to take part and share their views on what the Council should deliver.

Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, Councillor Amy Brookes, said: “Rotherham Council has big ambitions for housing in the borough and this latest consultation will ensure we continue to deliver what residents want to see.

“From major building projects to making existing homes more energy efficient as we work towards a more sustainable future, this consultation will help ensure we have the right priorities for the next three years.

“We need as many people as possible to participate and tell us what matters most to them so we can produce a strategy that has a lasting and positive impact on the lives of everyone in the borough.”

You can take part in the Housing Strategy Consultation strategy here.

Following the consultation, residents will be able to see the new strategy on the council website from May 2022.
