The death of Her Majesty The Queen

Portrait of HM the Queen

Statement from The Worshipful The Mayor of Rotherham, Councillor Tajamal Khan, on the announcement of the death of Her Majesty The Queen.

On behalf of Rotherham Council, I wish to express my extreme sadness at the announcement of the death of Her Majesty The Queen.

Official flags will be flown at half-mast today (9th September) at Rotherham Town Hall and at the main council building, Riverside House, on Main Street and again on the day of the funeral, which has yet to be confirmed.

Official Books of Condolence are open to the general public at Rotherham Town Hall, Riverside House and Rotherham Minster up to and including Tuesday 20 September. Opening times are as follow:

Rotherham Town Hall, The Crofts, Moorgate St, Rotherham S60 2TH: Monday to Thursday 8.30am to 5.30pm; Friday 8.30am to 4.30pm. Closed on Monday 19 September.

Riverside House, Main St, Rotherham S60 1QY: Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5.30pm. Closed on Monday 19 September.

Rotherham Minster, Church St, Rotherham S60 1PD: Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm; Saturday 9am to 2pm; Sunday 9.30am to 1pm. Open 9am to 1pm on Monday 19 September.

Personal condolences can be recorded online on the Council’s website – www.rotherham.gov.uk. An e-book of condolence has also been set up on the Buckingham Palace website royal.uk.

Members of the Public may lay flowers at the Rotherham Minster, if they wish. If it all possible please remove plastic wrapping to aid with eventual environmentally-friendly removal. Flowers laid at other locations in the Town Centre will be transferred to the Minster overnight.

As a mark of respect, it has been agreed that both the Deputy Mayor and I will be suspending our programme of official engagements until further notice and will notify those affected, with our apologies.

The Reading of the Proclamation on the accession of a new Sovereign took place on Sunday 11th September at 2pm on the steps of Rotherham Town Hall. A video of the Proclamation is available to view here.
