What your council needs to do
To get the full amount of funding, your council must show how it is:
- spending money on road maintenance
- improving the condition of roads
- planning future work
- using best practice
The Department for Transport (DfT) wants to make sure councils are spending more on road maintenance. Councils should also balance long-term maintenance with short-term repairs.
Quick fixes are sometimes needed for safety, but they should not be the main way of working. Councils should follow a risk-based approach and focus on prevention, as set out in the Code of Practice on Well-Managed Highway Infrastructure.
