Support for the Armed Forces Community

The Rotherham’s Armed Forces Community is entitled to the following through the Armed Forces Covenant:

a) Not being at a disadvantage when trying to access public services such as health care, housing, employment, education and welfare.

b) Special consideration, where appropriate, especially for those who have given the most such as the injured and the bereaved.

Organisations and other support organisations

In addition to the Council providing support to the Armed Forces community there are a plethora of military charities representing both large, national organisations and smaller local specialists. All of them bring a wealth of expertise and are truly committed to helping those that are serving / have served and their families.

Employment, Training & Courses

Regular Forces Employment Association: Provides life-long, life changing support, jobs and training opportunities to service leavers and veterans, irrespective of circumstances, rank, length of service or reason for leaving. Online Registration via website:

Lifeworks: A free 4–5 day course for anyone who has served in the British Armed Forces, tailored specifically towards helping ex-Forces personnel secure the future they want.

Health and Mental Health

Combat Stress: Leading Veterans’ mental health charity in the UK providing treatment for ex-Service personnel suffering with mental ill-health including Post-Traumatic Stress (PTSD), anxiety and depression.

Help 4 Homeless Veterans: Their mission is to source and provide accommodation to Ex Service Personnel who are living rough or in unsatisfactory accommodation.

Other Support

Project NOVA: Project Nova supports Veterans who have been arrested and enter Policy Custody. It also supports Veterans who are referred by specialist Police Teams, or other statutory organisations, because they are at risk of arrest or have vulnerabilities. Project Nova works in partnership with Police Forces and NHS Liaison and Diversion who refer veterans to their service. Veterans meeting this criteria can also self-refer.

Support Services for military and defence personnel and their families: The Strategy for our veterans sets the principles and aims to continue to support older veterans and establishes the right conditions that will empower and support the newer generation and their wider community. This strategy applies across the spectrum of the Veterans demographic groups.

Looking ahead, this strategy sets the intent for veterans public services across the UK to work towards.
