Ceremonies at Approved Premises

All approved premises for marriage and civil partnership have designated rooms licensed for civil ceremonies. The license specifies the maximum number of people each room can accommodate, including venue staff, Registrars, photographers, videographers, musicians, the couple, two witnesses, and all guests, including babies and children. Please discuss capacity directly with your chosen venue.

Personalising Your Ceremony

We understand how important it is for your day to be special to you. Personalising your ceremony allows you to incorporate meaningful touches that reflect your personality and love story. Here are some ways you can personalise your ceremony:

  • Entrance Party: Include special people in your entrance party, such as bridesmaids, flower girls, and other significant individuals to make your ceremony even more memorable.
  • Choice of Introduction: Select from a variety of introductions to set the tone for your ceremony.
  • Legal Wording for Declaration and Contract: Choose the legal wording that best fits your style and preferences.
  • Personal Promises: Opt for promises from our suggested list or craft your own heartfelt vows.
  • Promises to Children: Include special promises to children, making them feel an integral part of the ceremony.
  • Ring Exchange Wording: Choose from suggested wordings for the ring exchange to find the perfect fit.
  • Conclusion: Select a conclusion that resonates with you and your partner to bring your ceremony to a close.
  • Readings: Include up to three readings that hold special meaning to you. It adds an extra personal touch if a friend or family member delivers the readings during your ceremony.
  • Music: Enhance your ceremony with music for entrance, signing the marriage schedule and exiting the ceremony, whether pre-recorded or performed live.

Additionally, you are welcome to have photographers and videographers capture your special day. We will coordinate with them to ensure they capture all the key moments beautifully.

Feel free to explore these options and make your ceremony truly your own. If you have any other ideas or need further assistance, we're here to help.

Using a Celebrant instead of a Registrar

If you are considering using an independent celebrant instead of a Registrar, be aware of the following key differences and legal considerations:

  • Celebrants cannot perform legal marriage or civil partnership ceremonies. Any certificates provided by a celebrant have no legal standing for name changes or proof of marriage or civil partnership.
  • Celebrants must clarify that the ceremony is commemorative and that a legal marriage or civil partnership has already occurred elsewhere.
  • You must give notice of marriage or civil partnership at your local register office and have a legal ceremony at a licensed venue or register office before the celebrant-led ceremony. The official date of marriage/civil partnership will be that of the legal ceremony not the celebrant ceremony.
  • Celebrants are often sole traders and may not be able to attend due to illness or emergencies, whereas Registrars are part of a larger team ensuring coverage.
