Applying for a school

All children are entitled to a full-time school place in the September following their fourth birthday.

If you need to make an application for a school place, you can find out more on the school admissions webpages. You can also find information about all mainstream schools in Rotherham and their admission processes.

Visit the school admissions webpage

All children in care, including those in kinship care, are given priority in school admission arrangements and the School Admission Code explains this in more detail.

Read the School Admissions Code

We know that choosing and applying for a school place can be a stressful time, but support and advice is available from specialist admissions staff and they can be contacted using our online form.

Make a school admissions enquiry

If a placement is refused at your preferred school for your kinship child then you have a right to an independent appeal. Further information is provided alongside any refusal of a school place.

Rotherham SEND Local Offer

Rotherham’s SEND Local Offer is the best place to go for all advice and guidance on your kinship child’s education, especially if your kinship child has Special Educational Needs or has experienced emotional difficulties affecting them in school.

Find out more about Education and Childcare on the Rotherham SEND Local offer website

The SEND Local Offer also has a section explaining graduated response and all the help and support available to children in school. These may be through Education and Health Care Plans.
