Report a vehicle

Report an abandoned vehicle

The Council has a duty to deal with abandoned vehicles on public land so if you think a vehicle has been abandoned please tell us about it.

What is an abandoned vehicle?

An abandoned vehicle is one which has been deliberately left in a location by its owner with no intention by the owner to ever return to the vehicle.

Signs that a vehicle has been abandoned include:

  • Broken windows
  • Flat or missing tyres
  • Looks damaged or run-down

When we can't take action

The Council cannot respond to anonymous reports as we may need to contact you for additional information. Your personal details will not be given to anyone else.

Sometimes vehicles are reported to us when they have not been abandoned and we are unable to respond to these reports.

Please do not report an abandoned vehicle if:

  • The vehicle has valid road tax. Check if a vehicle is taxed
  • A vehicle is badly parked but does not break any parking restrictions (for example yellow lines)
  • A vehicle is parked in an unfavourable position
  • The identity of the vehicle owner is known and lives locally
  • The vehicle has been in its current location for less than two weeks. This is because the owner may have legitimately parked the vehicle for a temporary period.

Vehicles that are suspected to be stolen, broken down or are causing an obstruction should be notified to South Yorkshire Police.
