Staying Put

If you live with a foster carer, you may be able to stay with them after you turn 18 and up to age 21.

In some cases, Staying Put can continue beyond 21 (up to age 25) if you are in education or training. This includes support if you go to university or join the Armed Forces.

Your foster carer will continue to receive support and payments so they can carry on looking after you.

Staying Put gives you more time to get ready for living on your own.

Because you will be living with your foster carer as an adult, we will help you create a Staying Put living‑together agreement. This sets out how you will contribute to household costs and how you will share responsibilities.

In some circumstances, you may still be able to claim benefits or Universal Credit.

Support while you are Staying Put

You will continue to have support from your PA and the Leaving Care Service.

You can learn new skills with your carers, such as:

  • cooking and preparing meals
  • budgeting and managing money
  • organising appointments
  • managing day‑to‑day living

When the time is right, your PA will work with you to develop a move‑on plan so you feel prepared for your next step.
