Complain about a councillor

How we investigate your complaint about a councillor

The Standards and Ethics Committee makes sure that members follow the highest standards of conduct at all times. We take all allegations of member misconduct very seriously.

When you make a complaint, there will be an initial assessment to decide:

  • Whether the code of conduct applies in these circumstances
  • Whether there should be an investigation of the allegation

There may be no investigation or further action on a complaint for a number of reasons, such as:

  • The complaint is not about a member breaking the code of conduct
  • There is not enough evidence to support the complaint
  • The matter being complained about is not serious
  • A long time has passed between the event and the complaint being made
  • An investigation or other action would not be in the public interest
