Homelessness: Relationship breakdown

Joint tenants or joint owners

If you are joint tenants or jointly own a property, you both have an equal legal right to live in that property. You are both liable to make sure that financial obligations are met, such as paying the mortgage or rent.

Neither party is allowed to get the locks changed or stop the other from living within the property.

If you cannot decide on who should leave the property, then you need to speak to a solicitor for advice.

You shouldn't leave the property unless it is unsafe for you to live there, this is because you do have a property you can live in, and we may not accept you as being homeless.
