Homelessness: Relationship breakdown

Married partners or civil partners

If you are married or in a civil partnership, then you still have a legal right to the property even if you are not the one who is on the tenancy agreement or property deeds.

Neither party is allowed to get the locks changed or stop the other from living within the property. Even if they own the property or are renting it, they cannot force you to leave the property.

If you cannot decide on who should leave the property, then you need to speak to a solicitor for advice.

You shouldn't leave the property unless it is unsafe for you to live there, this is because you do have a property you can live in, and we may not accept you as being homeless.
