Pre-booked Tours
Rotherham Museums, Arts and Heritage has been working closely with specialist architects, structural engineers and building specialists to ensure that Keppel's Column is safe to reopen to the public.
Keppel’s Column is over 250 years old and was restored in 2022 following a period of closure for over 50 years. As a result of its prolonged period of closure and subsequent disrepair little is known about the structure and how it was engineered. Following the major restoration project in 2022, it was expected that after a period of settling, the Column may require additional building and maintenance work to provide additional anchors and brickwork repointing. As a result of the restoration project the building remains structurally stable, but we want to ensure that the public can continue to access the site for many years to come and therefore need to test its structure and where appropriate strengthen aspects of the interior structure.
As such we are unable to open Keppel’s Column for tours during the 2025 season. We appreciate that this is disappointing for those that have been looking forward to tours and we apologise for any inconvenience this causes, but our priority must always be the safety of staff, volunteers and visitors.
Our team is working hard with Historic England and partners to ensure that any additional work is carried out as soon as possible.
