On 20 December 2024, the government announced how much money each local and mayoral authority will get for road maintenance in 2025 to 2026. This includes extra funding from the 2024 Budget.
Extra funding and conditions
The government is giving an extra £500 million for road maintenance in 2025 to 2026. But 25% of this money will only be given if councils meet certain conditions. These conditions are designed to help councils improve how they look after roads.
This follows a report by the National Audit Office and a hearing by the Public Accounts Committee. Both said the Department for Transport (DfT) needs to better understand the condition of local roads.
By sharing information about your roads, your council can help secure more funding and keep residents informed about what’s being done to improve roads.
