Work on the Sheffield Road Cycleways scheme is complete, in a wave of regeneration bringing improved transport links, more jobs and better housing to the area.

Phase 1 added new cycle tracks between the borough boundary and Bessemer Way.
Phase 2 added new cycle tracks between Bessemer Way and Centenary Way.
Phase 3 improved conditions for walking and cycling between Westgate and the A6178 Sheffield Road.

Two-way traffic has returned to Westgate following the completion of phase 3. Four hundred metres of advisory cycle lanes on Westgate help extend the existing cycle route from the Sheffield City boundary near the Magna Science Adventure Centre on the A6178, through to Rotherham Town Centre. They indicate to drivers the distance they should leave when passing cyclists. Motorists in both directions use a single carriageway down the middle of the road, moving into the advisory cycle lanes when passing vehicles approaching in the opposite direction.

The scheme also brings enhanced features for pedestrians such as new paving and better bus stops and improved provision for businesses with easier customer parking and loading.

The innovative Sheffield Road Cycleways scheme accompanies the regeneration of Templeborough with under-used sites become productive again. Two new food and beverage outlets and six new managed business workspaces are being developed, served by car-parking, a tram-train stop and links to the park and ride at Magna. Alongside the creation of jobs, more than a hundred new homes are being built to increase the Borough’s stock of affordable housing.

Town centre regeneration includes the exciting Forge Island development, which includes an eight-screen state-of-the-art cinema, a 69-room Travelodge hotel and restaurants, all set within attractive public spaces.

Monies for the Sheffield Road Cycleways scheme were secured by Rotherham Council and the South Yorkshire Mayor Combined Authority from the Government’s Transforming Cities Fund.

Templeborough regeneration is funded by the Town Deal, part of the Government’s Towns Fund, and the Levelling Up Fund (LUF).

Forge Island is a joint scheme being delivered by Rotherham Council and development partners Muse.
