No digging to ground will be permitted, soil available on site but all associated cost will be met by the exhibitors. To be judged by Clifton Park Horticulture Team. 52: Bake Rotherham Technical Challenge - Lemon Loaf Cake

Using the following ingredients and method, make a Lemon Loaf Cake, to be displayed on own board.

Ingredients

  • 250g caster sugar
  • Zest from 1 lemon
  • 226g of softened butter, unsalted
  • 3 large eggs
  • 80g lemon curd
  • 260g self-raising flour
  • 100g icing sugar
  • 2 tbs lemon curd
  • Juice of 1 lemon

Method

Preheat the oven to 180C (350F) or 160F (220F) Fan Setting. Line a 900g (2lb) loaf tin with parchment paper letting the ends of the paper hang over the edge of the tin. Alternatively use a loaf tin liner.

  1. Measure the sugar into a mixing bowl and then add the lemon zest softened butter and eggs. Beat together for about a minute until light and fluffy.
  2. Add the lemon curd and beat it in, scraping the bowl halfway through.
  3. Add the self raising flour and mix into the batter until it is completely smooth.
  4. Spoon the batter into a lined loaf tin and level. Bake for about an hour or until the cake is well risen and firm to the touch. A skewer inserted in the centre should come out clean. Cool on a wire rack.
  5. Mix the ingredients for the glaze together in a bowl and spread over the cooled cake. Decorate with lemon slices or leave plain. Slice and enjoy!

135: Display of vegetables

To occupy ground space 6 feet long x 4 feet deep.

Staging as well as quality will be considered in awarding points.

Twenty kinds of vegetables will be taken into consideration for points, and these must be indicated on the pointing sheet. An exhibitor may stage other vegetables, flowers, and fruit and these will only be considered by the Judges in assessing the additional 70 points which are awarded for display only.

Class 135 will be judged in accordance with the suggested pointing and assessment of Merit referred to in the “Judging of Vegetables” as set out in the R.H.S. Horticultural Show Handbook and prospective exhibitors may obtain a copy of the pointing sheet from Made in Rotherham Show Team, Clifton Park Garden Building, Clifton Park, Clifton Lane, Rotherham S65 2AA.

The display must be the joint effort of at least four Society members – the full names and addresses of whom must be shown on the entry form and must be completed by the society secretary. Only one entry from the same four society members will be permitted.

No Society names to be displayed on the entries or pointing sheet until after judging is completed.

Only four society members may enter this class from each allotment site.
