Educating your child at home

Home education and special educational needs

You can choose home education for your child even if they have an Education, Health & Care Plan (EHCP).

The Council will still carry out regular reviews for any child with an EHCP.

If you take your child out of mainstream school to start home educating them, the school will tell our Home Education and Special Educational Needs Teams about this.

If your child attends a special school and you want to start home education, you need to discuss this with the school. The law about home education is different where a child with an EHCP attends a special school. Please contact the Home Education or the Special Educational Needs Team to discuss your plans.

Because your decision to home educate your child involves a change of placement as written in their EHCP, we advise that this decision is discussed through an annual review called by school at the point your child becomes home educated. It is important that you consider how you are going to meet your child’s needs and outcomes as specified in their EHCP. This information will be requested by the EHE team as part of their annual contact with you.
